Despite goals from John Rooney and Corey Hertzog, the New York Red Bulls Reserves fell to the Chicago Fire Reserves, 4-2, at Lockhart Stadium Wednesday.

Chicago took the lead after Red Bulls midfielder Matt Kassel felled a Fire player in the box. Forward Orr Barouch stepped up and converted it past Jimmy Maurer to give Chicago the early lead. However, the Red Bulls equalized seven minutes later. New York earned a free kick just outside of the penalty box and Rooney stepped up and curled it around the wall and into the back of the net.

“We looked very tired. You can see it with the movements, the passing game, too many unforced errors,” said Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe. “The passing game was too slow too but to be fair to these young players, they had a decent session yesterday, so perhaps that was too much.”

In a seesaw battle, the Fire again regained the advantage in the 30th minute. Yoximar was on the right side of the box and found Barouch, who one-timed it inside the left post. Barouch completed his first half hat trick with moments left in the first half, chesting down a Pari Pantazopolous cross and firing it in.

The Fire nearly extended its lead in the 61st minute, earning its second penalty after goalkeeper Alex Horwath felled Kwame Obeng Darko near the penalty spot. However, Horwath made a great double save, stopping Darko’s conversion attempt before parrying Nadir Taider’s shot off the rebound.

Horwath’s efforts would help, as the Red Bulls narrowed the deficit to one, getting a penalty kick of their own in the 68th minute. Hertzog made no mistake, tucking his shot into the lower right hand corner of the goal.

With the Red Bulls pressing for an equalizer, Barouch tallied his fourth goal in the last play of the game, putting home a Jason Herrick cross.
