HARRISON, NJ– Red Bull New York announced today that it has signed defender Mike Jones. Jones will be available for selection for the Red Bulls match Sunday night against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field (10:00 PM ET; TV: MSG Plus, Galavision; Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).

“We are excited to sign Mike, as we wanted to bring him in to see if he can provide depth to our left back position,” said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We look forward to tracking his progress with us this season.”

Jones, a left-footed defender, was selected by Sporting Kansas City as the 28th overall selection in the 2011 MLS Supplemental draft on Jan. 18, 2011, before being waived on May 5. He did not make any MLS appearances for Kansas City, but played in one reserve league match.

The St. Peters, MO native played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for four years, being named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team in 2010 while playing 60 games during his college career, notching six goals and two assists. In his senior year, Jones and the Cougars were runners-up in the MVC Tournament. Jones faced the Red Bulls in a reserve match while playing for the Columbus Crew as a guest player on May 30 at Montclair State University.
