The New York Red Bulls Academy sides combined for a 2-1-1 record against BW Gottschee this past weekend.
Action started off with the 99 pre-Academy Red Bulls, who fell to BW Gottschee this past weekend by the final of 3-1. Brandon Haughton scored the lone goal for the Red Bulls in the loss, as the club dropped to third place off a 19-2-2 record. New York will look to close out strong in the remaining three matches of the season before attempting to make a deep run into the postseason.
New York’s U-14 side defeated Gottschee 2-0 thanks to goals from Sean Teixera and Dantea Greer. Following both first-half tallies, the Red Bulls defense locked down to ensure the clean sheet and victory that improved the club to an overall record of 25-1-1.
In U-16 action, the Red Bulls and Gottschee tied 1-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Malcolm Dixon opened up the scoring for New York with a free kick, which would ultimately stand as the only New York tally on the day. Gottschee was awarded a penalty kick later in the match, one they converted to draw level with the Red Bulls. Despite a few close calls on both sides of the pitch, the score would stand as each club walked away with a point on the day. The U-16s will now head off to France to play in a tournament against European academy clubs.
And in the final Academy match of the weekend, the U-18s defeated Gottschee 4-1 Saturday afternoon with a furiously blazing tally of four goals in the last 20 minutes of play. It took almost the entire first half to open up the scoring in this one, but Gottschee got one on the board in the 40th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the half. The Red Bulls offense continued to press but couldn’t crack the Gottschee defense. That is, until the 70th minute.
Derrick Etienne, a U-16 player playing alongside U-18s, buried the equalizer in the 70th minute off an Alex Muyl pass for his first of the season that allowed New York to draw level. Eight minutes later, a Gottschee own-goal provided the Red Bulls with the go-ahead tally. In the 80th minute it was Etienne again, rounding out the brace on another feed from Muyl, who assisted his sixth goal of the season on the play. With a 3-1 lead in hand, the Red Bulls capped off the day with a fourth-straight unanswered goal in the 90th minute, courtesy of a Kerlins Georges pass for Ethan Decker, who buried his fifth of the season.
