HARRISON, N.J. (July 20, 2015) – New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made his 91st consecutive start last weekend against Orlando City SC, a shutout win for the Red Bulls, 2-0. The start moved him past former Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielson (90) and alone in second place in consecutive regular season starts. He has played the full 90 minutes in each and every one of his 91 starts.
The streak began on September 29, 2012, almost three years ago. On that day, Robles made his first MLS start for RBNY, making five saves in a win at home against Toronto FC, 4-1, and hasn’t looked back since.
Flashing forward to today, Robles has an impressive 1.29 goals against average, the best in franchise history, and an all-time record of 40-26-25. He also owns the best winning percentage in club history, .577, and is second all-time in shutouts with 24. The club leader in shutouts, Tony Meola (25), a former number one goalkeeper for the U.S. National Team, achieved this milestone by playing 34 more games than Robles.
Robles trails only Kevin Hartman, who started 112 consecutive games. He has also started and played every minute of each MLS Cup Playoffs match since the streak began in 2012. In the postseason, Robles has started and played nine games, and recorded a 1.39 goals against average.
