2015 IN FOCUS: Lloyd Sam

Lloyd Sam took his game to another level in 2015, and was one of several Red Bulls to have career years as the team claimed a second Supporters’ Shield in three seasons. Sam set a new MLS career high with 10 goals, doubling his previous MLS career high of five, set in 2013. Sam’s 10 goals were second-most on the team behind Bradley Wright-Phillips. Three of Sam’s goals were game-winners, also a new MLS career high. The winger also added seven assists, the third most on the team.

The Englishman scored the Red Bulls first goal of the season on opening day in Kansas City, helping New York earn a 1-1 draw on the road. Sam then got the second goal in the home opener against D.C., and scored a late equalizer two weeks later, this time at D.C., to give him three goals in the first four games.

Sam showed up on the score sheet consistently in 2015, only once going more than two games without a goal or assist. He scored in three straight games from late September into October, and finished the season with three goals and an assist in six games as New York made its Supporters’ Shield run.

In August Sam joined an elite New York group, becoming just the seventh player in team history to record at least 15 goals and 15 assists for New York. Sam Joined Thierry Henry, Clint Mathis, Amado Guevera, Dane Richards, Eduardo Hurtado and Joel Lindpere on the list. Sam finished his third full season in New York with 19 goals and 18 assists in 90 league appearances.
