2015 IN FOCUS: Felipe

Midfielder Felipe joined New York ahead of 2015, reuniting with Jesse Marsch – the coach that brought him to Montreal ahead of the Impact’s inaugural season in 2015. Felipe was an important cog in the holding midfield for New York, and contributed three goals and five assists as well. The Brazilian was the only field player to start all 34 regular season games for the Red Bulls.

Per Opta, Felipe finished third in MLS in passes (1861) and successful passes (1524) as he helped New York build out of the back. He took the fourth-most touches in the league, and contributed 67 interceptions and won 47 of the 57 tackles he attempted.

Felipe got his first goal as a member of the Red Bulls on April 26, earning New York a tie against the LA Galaxy. He added a late strike against New York City FC in the third derby to cement a third Red Bulls’ win, and also scored the game-winner against Portland with a strike from distance that earned him a goal of the year nomination.
