FELIPE VS. FELIPE: Which goal was better?

HANOVER, N.J. – It’s an all-Felipe final for the MLS Goal of the Week, and it should come as little surprise.

En route to a thrilling 4-3 victory, New York’s midfield maestro orchestrated both the game-tying and game-winning goals in quite spectacular fashion. Both goals sent the Red Bull Arena crowd into frenzy, but which one was best?

That all depends upon whom you’re asking.

“It’s hard to say because they’re both excellent goals,” midfielder Sacha Kljestan told NewYorkRedBulls.com. “But I’d probably say the free kick because free kicks aren’t easy to score nowadays; goalies are athletic, you have to get it up and over the wall, and the pressure of a game-winner instead of an [equalizer] is bigger. So I’d say the free kick, it was a beautiful goal.”

Kljestan wasn’t alone in his thinking, as teammates and coaches alike shared a similar sentiment.

“Ultimately, the last one is what gave us the win,” Lloyd Sam said. “They were both pretty similar, but I’ll go with that one.”

Added head coach Jesse Marsch: “I think the game-winner just because it’s a game-winner. I think they’re both close aesthetically, but the second one being a game-winner is a big goal.”

It seemed as if the consensus pick within the squad was the bending free kick that propelled the Red Bulls to their first three points of the season, but there was one dissenting voice that stood out amongst the group.

The only person who rated the equalizer as the better of the two? None other than the goal-scoring hero himself.

“I think the first one, because it made us believe that we could win that game,” Felipe said after training on Thursday. “It was a good goal, but more than anything, I’m really happy that we could get three points and get back on track to keep moving forward.”
