THE TIES THAT BIND: Connections between NYCFC and New York Red Bulls

Red Bulls midfielder Sacha Kljestan and NYCFC defender Jason Hernandez are longtime friends. The two first played together, and roomed together, at Seton Hall, and were also MLS teammates at Chivas USA on a roster that also included Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. 


Hernandez was originally drafted by the MetroStars in 2005 Supplemental draft before being traded to Chivas USA in a draft day deal that allowed Chivas to select Kljestan. The pair were also groomsmen in each other’s weddings.


Red Bulls homegrown signing Brandon Allen’s brother, R.J., plays for New York City FC.


New York City FC midfielder Medhi Ballouchy joined the Red Bulls in the summer of 2010 from Colorado, and played with RBNY until the Summer of 2012, when he departed for San Jose.


New York City FC manager Patrick Vieira was a teammate of Ian Wright, father of Bradley and Shaun Wright-Phillips, at Arsenal from 1996 to 1998. Shaun Wright-Phillips and Vieira played briefly together for Manchester City during the 2010-11 season.


Shaun Wright-Phillips and NYC FC midfielder Frank Lampard were also teammates at Chelsea.


Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara spent the 2015 season on loan with NYC FC. Meara was loaned out as part of the first trade between the two clubs, with saw the Red Bulls land everyday starter Sal Zizzo on a permanent basis. Zizzo was selected by NYC FC in the 2015 MLS expansion draft from Kansas City. 


While in Kansas City, Zizzo was teammates with NYC FC’s Mikey Lopez. 


NYC FC midfielder Kwadwo Poku played in the youth system of Ghanaian club Asante Kotoko SC, the same club where Red Bulls center back Gideon Baah began his professional career.​
