NEW YORK – Derby matches are often special, but Saturday afternoon more than lived up to billing.
In their fourth-ever meeting, the New York Red Bulls rather handily dispatched their noisy neighbors from the Bronx, New York City FC.
Not only did the Red Bulls collect three points on the night, the stat book could hardly keep up with the amount of notable records set on the night. Luckily, we’ve go you covered on NewYorkRedBulls.com.
Without further ado, here is your NYCFC v RBNY recap, by the numbers:
7: Where else could we start? In their win, the Red Bulls tied an MLS record for largest margin of victory while also setting a new franchise record for goals scored in a single match. Their seven-goal outburst was their highest scoring match since the Supporters’ Shield clincher against the Chicago Fire, a 5-2 win at Red Bull Arena on October 27, 2013. New York’s previous high for goals in a MLS game was six in a 6-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on August 26, 2006 at Giants Stadium.
4: Of those seven goals, an astounding four of them came off of set piece opportunities. The corner kick service from Sacha Kljestan and Felipe proved to be vital as the Red Bulls managed to make the most of their dead ball situational play.
6: Bradley Wright-Phillips has scored more than most since entering the league in 2013, but he sees red when he lines up against the blues. Starting all four matches against NYCFC, BWP has found the back of the net six times, tied for the most he’s scored against any team (Wright-Phillips has also scored six goals against the Houston Dynamo).
11: The Englishman continues to work his way up the franchise scoring lists, placing himself alongside the most celebrated names in franchise history. Saturday’s brace was Wright-Phillips’ 11th career multi-goal game for New York, putting him in sole possession of second place on the franchise’s all-time list. He trails only Juan Pablo Angel in the record books (12).
12: Meeting for the fourth time on Saturday afternoon, the Red Bulls came out on top once again. Not only are they undefeated when facing off against the boys in blue; they’ve not even dropped a point. Four matches, four wins, 12 points.
119: Already surpassing Kevin Hartman as the Ironman of MLS, goalkeeper Luis Robles continues to rewrite the record books. With his start on Saturday, Robles surpassed Chris Klein's record of 118 consecutive starts. Robles is the only MLS player to start 100 or more consecutive games for the same franchise.
2: He’s hardly the tallest guy on the pitch, yet Dax McCarty has always had an uncanny ability to nod in some important goals for the Red Bulls. After heading in game winners against Real Salt Lake (7/27/13) and D.C. United (11/1/15), the captain managed to get on the end of set piece service not once, but twice on Saturday. McCarty’s brace marked the first two-goal game of his 11-year MLS career.
3: Head coach Jesse Marsch elected to empty his bench on Saturday, bringing on Alex Muyl, Gonzalo Veron, and Gideon Baah in the second half. One impact sub is impressive enough, but the Red Bulls saw all three of their bench performers find the back of the net against New York City FC.
1: There were a series of firsts in the Bronx, as Homegrown forward Alex Muyl bagged his first MLS goal, as did Ghanaian international Gideon Baah. Gonzalo Veron headed home his first goal of the 2016 season.
10: With those players on the score sheet, the Red Bulls now boast 10 different goal scorers within their roster (Bradley Wright-Phillips, Mike Grella, Lloyd Sam, Sacha Kljestan, Dax McCarty, Felipe, Ronald Zubar, Alex Muyl, Gonzlo Veron, Gideon Baah).
3: Saturday’s 7-0 win marked back-to-back shutout performances for the Red Bulls’ defense and goalkeeper Luis Robles, their third of the season. Their previous shutouts came against the Chicago Fire last week, and a 4-0 home win against FC Dallas on April 29.
16: With the win, the Red Bulls are now tied for the most wins in the East with five. Standing on 16 points, they are now just a single point off of their 13-game pace from a season ago, a year that ended in Supporters’’ Shield glory.
