Scouting Report

The Red Bulls are riding high after their 7-0 thrashing of NYCFC last weekend and will look to continue their current two-game win streak.  New York will have its work cut out for them, however, as the league’s leading goal scorer, Sebastian Giovinco comes to town, already having scored a goal against the Red Bulls this season, converting a penalty kick on March 6.  Toronto is coming off of a scoreless tie with Columbus Crew last Saturday.

Bradley Wright-Phillips will look to add to his recent run of good form, scoring five goals in the Red Bulls’ last six games after failing to put the ball in the net in the first seven games of New York’s campaign.  BWP scored two goals in the last match against NYCFC, one from a Mike Grella cross and the second on a bicycle kick.  Wright-Phillips has three goals and one assist in seven appearances against Toronto FC.

The Red Bulls’ defense has also seen an improvement since the acquisition of defender Aurelien Colin on April 29.  In the four games since he joined the club, New York has given up just three goals, compared to 17 goals conceded in the first nine games of the season.  Look for New York’s defense to have another strong performance against a Toronto FC team that has struggled to find scoring in recent games.

Luis Robles currently holds a streak of 227 minutes without allowing a goal and he will look to continue that streak on Saturday night, where he is also slotted to push his ironman streak to 120 consecutive starts.  The 32-year-old goalkeeper surpassed Chris Klien’s ironman record of 118 consecutive starts on Saturday against NYCFC.  Robles has a 5-3-2 record in 10 career appearances against Toronto FC.

Last season’s MVP, Sebastian Giovinco, has had success against the Red Bulls in his brief MLS career thus far, scoring two goals while adding one assist in three games.  The Italian midfielder has also shown good away form this season, tallying six goals and two assists in eight matches away from BMO Field.

Although they currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, Toronto FC has had trouble finding consistent form through their first 12 games, going just 1-2-2 in their last five games while scoring just 14 goals on the season, which is tied for fifth fewest in the league.  Striker Jozy Altidore managed no goals and just two assists before being sidelined with a hamstring injury on May 14 while midfielder Michael Bradley has only one assist and no goals in 12 starts this season.
