HARRISON, N.J. (August 20, 2016) - The New York Red Bulls head to Washington, D.C. this weekend to take on Atlantic Cup rival D.C. United as part of MLS Soccer Sunday. Kickoff at RFK Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m., with coverage on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and Red Bulls Radio.
Red Bulls Radio gets underway at 2:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff, hosted by Matt Harmon. Harmon will call the game in English with former Red Bull and MetroStar Steve Jolley, while Ernesto Motta provides Spanish play-by-play beginning at kickoff.
Sirius XMFC Channel 85 will broadcast the Red Bulls Radio English broadcast beginning at 3 p.m.
New York will look to extend its unbeaten streak to eight MLS matches, and 10 matches overall. The Red Bulls have not lost since falling to New York City FC, 2-0 on July 3. New York is 3-0-4 in MLS during that stretch, with three draws in three road matches.
In the first meeting of the season, the Red Bulls fell to D.C. United, 2-0 on May 13, also at RFK Stadium. The loss dropped the Red Bulls to last place in the East with 10 points from a 3-7-1 record. New York responded well after the loss, running off four straight shutout victories and outscoring opponents 13-0. New York is 7-2-5 in MLS since that match, and has climbed to third in the East, two points behind first-place NYC FC entering the weekend.
Most recently, the Red Bulls earned a 3-1 win over Montreal last weekend at Red Bull Arena, led by two goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips. With his second of the night, Wright-Phillips set a new franchise record for regular season goals with his 59th in a MLS league match. The forward has 14 of those 59 this season, good for second-most in MLS.
Sean Davis had a hand in both of Wright-Phillips' goals, and tacked on one himself at the start of the second half. Davis has two goals and two assists in two matches after being tabbed as the replacement for the injured Dax McCarty.
Following that match, the Red Bulls traveled to El Salvador and earned a 1-1 draw with Alianza FC in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. The Red Bulls sit atop Group F with four points through two CCL matches. Omer Damari scored his first goal for the club to earn the road point.
Sacha Kljestan earned an assist on the Damari goal after entering the match as a second-half substitute. Kljestan has 14 assists in MLS play this season, tying the franchise single-season assist record with nine games remaining.
Per Opta, Kljestan has created the most chances in MLS, with 82. The midfielder has created the most from set play (33) and most from open play (49).
D.C. enters at 6-8-9, in sixth place in the East. United is 5-4-3 at home this season, and snapped a six-match winless streak with a 2-0 win over Portland last weekend at RFK. Alvario Saborio and Fabian Espindola lead the team with four goals each, while Lloyd Sam has two assists in four appearances for D.C. since being traded from the Red Bulls at the beginning of July.
After Sunday, the Red Bulls return home to host another MLS original rival, the New England Revolution, on Sunday, August 28. Kickoff for that match is set for 2:30 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN and Red Bulls Radio.
