Ties that Bind: Club Connections between RBNY and Whitecaps FC

  • Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson played for the Red Bulls in 2010 and 2011, making 12 appearances over two seasons and scoring one goal.
  • Current Red Bulls assistant Denis Hamlett served as an assistant with Vancouver in 2011 on the staff on Tom Soehn before joining Jesse Marsch’s staff in Montreal in 2012.
  • Vancouver’s Giles Barnes and Kemar Lawrence have been playing together on the Jamaican national team since 2015. Both will miss today’s match while with the Reggae Boyz for World Cup Qualification.
  • Karl Ouimette (currently on loan to Jacksonville) has played alongside numerous Whitecaps on the Canadian national team since 2013.
  • Red Bulls II forward Stefano Bonomo played with Vancouver’s Christian Dean at the University of California-Berkeley from 2013-2014.  Andrew Jacobson (VAN) is also a Golden Bears alum, who played there from 2003-2006.
  • Vancouver’s Jordan Harvey and Sal Zizzo are both alumni of UCLA, and overlapped one year in 2005.
  • Vancouver’s Matias Laba and the Red Bulls’ Gonzalo Veron played against each other in Argentine’s Primera Division from 2010-2013. Laba played for Argentinos Juniors
  • Vancouver midfielders Andrew Jacobsen and Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara spent the 2015 season together at New York City FC.
  • Whitecaps defender Tim Parker played collegiately at St. John’s University, just 21 miles from Red Bull Arena.  Parker and Red Bulls’ Connor Lade were teammates during the 2011 season.
  • Cole Seiler of the Whitecaps played alongside Alex Muyl and Brandon Allen at Georgetown University from 2013-2015.
  • Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted played in Denmark from 2003-2005 against FC Copenhagen, where Hans Backe (NYRB Coach 2010-2012) coached and won three titles.
  • Pedro Morales of the Whitecaps also plays for the Chilean national team, which recently defeated Mexico 7-0 in the Copa America.  This was the first professional game to end 7-0 since the Red Bulls defeated NYCFC 7-0 less than a month earlier.
