Miami (Thursday, October 21, 2016) - The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) confirmed last night the match-ups and date ranges for the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League 2016/17.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC secured the top seed for the knockout rounds, assuring home field advantage for the second leg of each knockout round as long as the club remains in the tournament. The Canadian side will face fellow MLS club New York Red Bulls, seeded eighth, in one of four home-and-away quarterfinals which kick off in February.
Also qualified for the quarterfinal round, in order of seed, are Panama's Arabe Unido, the Mexican threesome of CF Pachuca, Pumas UNAM and Tigres UANL, three-time CONCACAF Champion Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica, and FC Dallas, a third representative from Major League Soccer in next year's quarterfinals.
Following the completion of group play, the eight group-topping teams were re-seeded 1-8, based on the number of points they achieved in the group stage, and using goal difference as the tie-breaker among teams tied with the same amount of points. In the case of seventh-place FC Dallas and eighth-place New York Red Bulls, which both finished on 8 points with a plus-4 goal differential, goals scored in group play became the tie-breaker.
That process yielded four pairings: 1-8, 2-7, 3-6 and 4-5, now set to face off in the quarterfinals next year.
