New York Red Bulls

Head Coach Jesse Marsch

On the team’s performance

“In certain areas I think our team played well and was organized. Then it was basically one play that cost us even though we had what I thought was a good control of the match. Even though we had some really good advantages, we couldn’t convert any of them.”

On confidence going back home

“Given everything, I think we put a lot into it and we know it’s only halftime and there’s a lot more to go in this series. We’ll be excited to go back home.”

On the play leading to the goal

“Donadel has time, takes a touch, looks up and our line was too high. We let them beat us with one ball over the top and it’s one-zero in a game we had pretty good control of. It’s frustrating we didn’t deal with that well.”

Felipe

On not finishing chances

“I think we were a bit unlucky. We could have finished at least one goal, but we didn’t. Now we got to work very hard during the week to make sure next game at the Arena we can score two goals.”

On Montreal’s organization

“We know they’re a team that likes to be compact and get everyone behind the ball. I just think on the day we weren’t sharp enough to put the game on our terms. I think everything falls on us. Now we got to look at the video and try to be better next game.”

Luis Robles

On heading into the game with confidence

“We had a lot of confidence going into this game that we can get a result and unfortunately we didn’t get that. Now we got to turn our attention going home where we’ve done very well this year.”

On the performance

“They definitely had some dangerous moments going forward, but I felt we did a great job neutralizing them and some of their key threats. Unfortunately, one ball over the top caught us, but we’re going to be very mindful going into the next game that we are down and really can’t concede an away goal.”

Montreal Impact

Head Coach Mauro Biello

On his team’s confidence

“The team is coming together in terms of their responsibilities on the field. There’s so much fight in them. What was said after the game is that what I liked most is what they did after they scored and all celebrated together. To me that’s a bond and something very strong.”

On the team’s performance

“Credit to my players, as for me it was a fantastic performance. When I calculate the emotions of Thursday, the work of doing what we did to go out and win in D.C. and to come back here in front of our fans to win the game against probably the favourites to win MLS Cup was fantastic.”

On what he expected from NYRB

“I was expecting just that, them to be a team that applied pressure and a team that was fresh. It was important to manage this game well because we played on Thursday. I started the same lineup and I thought we did an excellent job of managing the game, not giving away anything and to score the goal that we needed.”

Evan Bush

On stopping Wright-Phillips’ early breakaway

“When it came through, I was in a position where I either had to stay on my line and let him take the ball down or make him commit to a play. When he tried to chip it over my head, I was there ready for it. Fortunately, I was there and didn’t handle it outside the box.”

On not conceding the away goal

“That’s the biggest part. In all honesty we would have been fairly content with a zero-zero, but winning one-zero is obviously even bigger. But the biggest part of that is keeping that clean sheet.”

Patrice Bernier

On not letting fatigue influence the game

“Yes, we played on Thursday, but when you have the will power you can get by any sort of fatigue. They pushed the game trying to tire us out. But in the end we came out with a bit more intelligence and got the goal on the counterattack.”

On countering New York’s fast-paced style

“We knew that they couldn’t play at that pace all game, so closer to the end it was just a matter of trying to keep the ball more when we could. When we started to do that, more spaces were created and it was a great pass to Matteo. That’s all he needs to score.”
