The New York Red Bulls (19-7-5, 62 pts) travel to San Jose Earthquakes (4-19-8, 20 pts) on Saturday, October 6 at 10:30 p.m. at Avaya Stadium.
Here are 5 Reasons to Watch, presented by Franklin Group...
Race for the Shield
The Red Bulls will look to stay in contention for the Supporters’ Shield as they sit only one point off the lead of the Eastern Conference with three games left in the regular season.
New York has captured the Supporters’ Shield twice in club history (2013, 2015).
Record-Setting Season
Following last week’s win against Atlanta United, the Red Bulls have set new club records for wins (19), points (62), and shutouts (13) in a season.
The previous records of wins (18) and points (60) were from the 2015 season in which the Red Bulls won the Supporters’ Shield.
"Original" MLS Matchup
Saturday’s match features two of the original 10 MLS clubs from the inaugural 1996 season, when the two teams were the San Jose Clash and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
New York won the first-ever matchup in San Jose 1-0, back on July 24, 1996.
Robles Records
On Sunday, Red Bulls Goalkeeper Luis Robles set a new club record with his 12th clean sheet of the year. Robles also tied his career best for wins in a season (18).
He only needs two more wins (98) to reach 100 for his career.
Brad's Back
New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips returns. The striker was suspended for the Atlanta match due to yellow card accumulation following a yellow card in the win versus Toronto.
Wright-Phillips needs just one more goal to become the first player in MLS history to score 20+ goals in three separate seasons. BWP scored 24 goals in 2016 and 27 goals in 2014 for the Red Bulls.
