Coaches of New York: Efe Sarloglu

“I was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, where soccer is part of everyday life. It was the game we played every time we stepped outside, the conversation we had at school with friends, and the sport we followed closely at home. Over time, it became more than just a game for me. It shaped how I think, how I compete, and how I connect with people. 

Growing up, I competed at an amateur level in multiple sports, with soccer always at the center. Naturally, I took on responsibility and leadership roles along the way. I also found myself helping my coaches with younger age groups, which gave me an early understanding of both the player’s and the coach’s perspective. Looking back, those experiences were not random. They were building the foundation for the path I am on today.

For me, being a coach is more than just leading a team. You carry a responsibility for every player you work with. It is not only about helping them improve as players, but also supporting their growth as people. I see coaching as uncovering potential that’s been there all along, like a diamond waiting to be discovered. Every activity, every session, and every conversation is an opportunity to help players grow and become better than they were the day before. 

The journey comes with challenges. Every player is different. Some are easier to reach, while others need more time and understanding, both mentally and technically. In those moments, you learn more about yourself as a coach. No matter the age, every individual wants to be heard, understood, and feel a sense of belonging. When you create that environment, it becomes much easier to truly connect with your players, and that is something I try to provide every day. 

I moved to the United States in 2024, and in 2025 I became part of the Red Bull environment. Since then, it has been an important step in my journey. Being part of a structure where coaches and players from different backgrounds come together has given me valuable perspective. Learning from experienced educators and working within a clear, player-centered methodology has helped me continue to grow, both personally and professionally. It is an environment that encourages development and consistently challenges you in a positive way. 

Last but not least, I would like to speak to anyone who is trying to build a life far away from home and loved ones: the sacrifices you make for your dreams will pay off eventually.''
