First Leg of Red Bulls – CD Olimpia Moved to Estadio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica
HARRISON, N.J. (January 29, 2018) – The venue for the first leg of the New York Red Bulls Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League series against CD Olimpia has been moved to Costa Rica’s Estadio Nacional in San Jose, CONCACAF announced today. The match is still set for Thursday, February 22, at 10 p.m. ET. The second leg at Red Bull Arena is set for Thursday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET.
- TICKETS: SCCL Leg 2 at Red Bull Arena
CONCACAF approved the site change request due to ongoing social unrest in Honduras, according to the official announcement. The match in Costa Rica will also be played behind closed doors, due to an on-going sanction against Olimpia that originated in the 2017 CONCACAF League.
CONCACAF also announced a change of venue for FC Montagua, the other Honduran side in the competition. The requests to move the matches, made individually by each club, were approved by the CONCACAF Council per section XVII. A. of the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Regulations, which deals with cases of force majeure. Per the Council decision, should either Honduran club advance to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Champions League, those matches would also be played outside Honduras, allowing time for the situation in that country to stabilize.
