HARRISON, N.J. (August 10, 2015) – Two members of the New York Red Bulls, defender Matt Miazga and midfielder Dax McCarty, have been named to the MLS Team of the Week for their performances in the 2-0 win over New York City FC on Sunday, and Wednesday’s 1-1 road draw against the Montreal Impact. New York coach Jesse Marsch was also named coach for the Team of the Week.
Two more Red Bulls, Connor Lade and Felipe, who had a goal against NYC FC, made the bench for MLS’ Team of the Week.
Miazga was integral to shutting down Spanish international David Villa and the New York City offense on Sunday night, and also limited Ignacio Piatti and the Impact attack midweek. The 19-year-old Homegrown Player has been a staple on the Red Bulls backline this season, only missing time to compete in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with the United States.
McCarty, the captain, also played a role in the defensive success of the team, applying pressure and cutting off opponents in the defensive midfield. Dax has also contributed offensively in recent games, and has a share of the team-lead for assists with six – one off his career high of seven, set back in 2007 with FC Dallas.
Marsch has rallied the Red Bulls for points in seven of the last eight games since snapping a four-game losing streak in the month of June. In his first year with New York, Marsch has coached the Red Bulls to a 10-6-6 record thus far and the second position in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Red Bulls are home for two of the next three matches against some of the top competition in the MLS Eastern Conference. New York welcomes Toronto FC this weekend for a meeting on Saturday, August 15 at 7 p.m.
Rivals D.C. United will travel to Red Bull Arena for a Sunday evening clash on August 30.
