The New York Red Bulls continue their 2016 season on Saturday May 21st in the season’s first New York derby against New York City FC.
The match will kickoff at 3:00pm at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx with coverage on FOX and the Red Bulls Radio Network on TuneIn.
It’s Heineken Rivalry Week across Major League Soccer as the Red Bulls take on NYCFC, the Philadelphia Union take on D.C. United, the Portland Timbers play the Vancouver Whitecaps and the LA Galaxy take on the San Jose Earthquakes across the league.
The Red Bulls’ Wednesday night home game versus the Chicago Fire ended in a 1-0 victory for New York with a beautiful second half goal from Mike Grella; his fourth of the season.
The Red Bulls and NYCFC have not yet met this season. The teams met three times last season, which was NYCFC’s first season in the league. All three matches ended in a victory for the Red Bulls, a streak they are looking to continue on Saturday.
NYCFC are sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 4-5-3 record overall, and 1-1-4 at home. The Red Bulls victory last match has moved them into fifth place in the Eastern Conference, with a 4-1-7 record overall, and 0-5-1 on the road.
After the derby on May 21st, the Red Bulls will head back to Red Bull Arena to host Toronto FC on Saturday May 28th. The match will kickoff at 7:00pm with coverage on MSG and the Red Bulls Radio Network on TuneIn.
NOTES
- Thomas McNamara extended his streak to four consecutive games with either a goal or an assist, netting the game-winning goal in NYCFC’s 2-1 win at the Portland Timbers. McNamara has a goal and three assists over the four-game span in which NYCFC drew once and won three – matching the club’s longest undefeated run in its history.
- The teams met three times in 2015, the first year for NYCFC in Major League Soccer, and the Red Bulls won all three.
- Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips owned the rivalry, scoring in each match, netting four goals in all. He scored both goals in the first meeting between the teams on May 10 at Red Bull Arena, a 2-1 Red Bulls win, then scored in the only meeting between the clubs at Yankee Stadium, a 3-1 win on June 28. Wright-Phillips scored the opening goal in the Red Bulls’ 2-0 win Aug. 9 in Harrison.
