Get to know the matchup in Keys to the Game:

One Point Away

One point is all the Red Bulls need on Sunday to make it out of the Group Stage and into the knockouts.

Following a win in penalties over New England, New York secured two points in its first match of the Group Stage. The Revolution then went on to defeat Atlético de San Luis, 5-1, on Wednesday night to round out their four points and advance to the Round of 32.

With San Luis not having any points yet in the tournament, the club would need to defeat the Red Bulls in regulation to move on in Leagues Cup.

If New York can, at minimum, draw with the opposition, it will put them over the threshold to advance into the Knockout Stage.

Unfamiliar Foe

Sunday will mark the first-ever matchup between New York and San Luis in the clubs’ history. With that, the matchup will be one of two sides who are unfamiliar with each other and their style of play.

New York has taken on teams from Liga MX just six times previously in its history, with Leagues Cup providing a rare and historic opportunity to take on teams from another league and country.

While Wednesday’s matchup between San Luis and the MLS’s New England provided some insight into San Luis’s performance, with New England taking the match 5-1, the Red Bulls will have to adapt to this new challenge as they continue their Leagues Cup bid.

Saving the Day

New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel has proved himself to be a difference maker in the Red Bulls’ first Leagues Cup match.

Coming up with two saves during regulation time, Coronel was able to come away with a clean sheet against MLS Eastern-Conference powerhouse New England.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, Coronel also came up with the key save necessary for New York to win 4-2, taking the extra point after the 0-0 draw to put New York ahead in the group standings.

The clean sheet was Coronel’s sixth of the season and 29th of his career across all competitions, as the Corumbá, Brazil native continues to be something of a “brick wall” that New York’s impressive defense can rely on.

On Sunday, the Red Bulls will call on their keeper again to keep San Luis at bay and advance to the knockout stage.
