Match Recap: NYRB II Falls at Home to the Charlotte Independence, 3-2

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (August 11, 2021) – New York Red Bulls II (3-10-4, 13 points) fell to the Charlotte Independence (7-7-2, 23 points), 3-2, on Tuesday, August 10 at MSU Soccer Park.

Charlotte struck first in the 13th minute as midfielder Marcelo Palomino scored off a free kick from just outside the box. Six minutes later, New York evened the score as forward Omar Sowe maneuvered around a defender and found the back of the net. The visitors regained the advantage in the 25th minute on a goal from midfielder Enzo Martinez and took the 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.

New York equalized for a second time two minutes into the second half on another goal from Sowe. Charlotte found the game-winner in the 61st minute, as midfielder Sylvain Marveaux capitalized in the box off a feed from midfielder Brant Bronico.

The brace for Sowe increased his season total to a team-leading six, and it marked his first multi-goal match of the season. Midfielder Jeremy Rafanello recorded an assist on both goals, and now has five on the campaign.

Goalkeeper Sam Joseph made his professional debut for New York.

New York will continue its four-match homestand on Saturday, August 14, as it will face San Antonio FC for the first time in club history. Kickoff from MSU Soccer Park is set for 7 p.m. ET.
