Match Recap: NYRB II Falls in Close Battle Against Charlotte Independence, 2-1

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 9, 2021) – New York Red Bulls II (5-17-6, 21 points) fell to the Charlotte Independence (15-9-4, 49 points) 2-1 on Saturday, October 9 at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

New York gained the early advantage in the third minute, as midfielder Jake LaCava flicked a ball towards the box that was played into the net by Charlotte defender Hugh Roberts for an own goal.

Early in the second half, Charlotte forward Irvin Parra drew a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Goalkeeper AJ Marcucci recorded a double save and midfielder Daniel Edelman cleared the ball out of play on the third chance in front of net.

Charlotte found the equalizer in the 66th minute, as midfielder Joel Johnson played a ball into the box that fell right in front of the net where midfielder Enzo Martínez capitalized. One minute later, they took the lead as forward Irvin Parra headed in a feed from midfielder Jake Areman.

Marucci recorded six saves in the contest, marking the fourth time this season he has recorded at least six saves in a match. It was the second time this season that he recorded a double save (July 2 vs. Miami FC).

Defender Issiar Dramé made his NYRB II debut in the contest.

New York will travel to face the division-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies on Friday, October 15. Kickoff from Al Lang Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage available on ESPN+.
