Match Recap: NYRB II Falls in Close Battle with Sacramento Republic FC

MONCLAIR, NJ (May 8, 2022) – New York Red Bulls II (1-7-1, 4 points) fell to Sacramento Republic FC (4-2-3, 18 points), 1-0, on Sunday, May 8, at MSU Soccer Park.

New York opened the match strong and was able to create a few scoring chances in the opening 25 minutes. In the 22nd minute, Jeremy Rafanello was able to find Jordan Adebayo-Smith on the edge of the box, but his shot just missed the side of the net.

The visitors had a curling free kick in the 55th minute that was saved by Giannis Nikopolidis. Sacramento broke through in the 88th minute, as Luther Archimede led a counterattack and found Maalique Foster, who was able to withstand a challenge and score.

Juan Castillo made his first appearance as captain for the club in the match. He also made his ninth start of the season and is the only player to start every match this season for Red Bulls II.

Nikopolidis made his second career start and recorded a career-high four saves in the contest.

Following the match, New York will travel to Trinity Health Stadium to battle Hartford Athletic on Saturday, May 14. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+.
