MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Dante Vanzeir Scores Match-Winner with First MLS Goal

Dante Vanzeir's first goal in Major League Soccer, a late one vs. Columbus Crew, was the match-winner, securing all three points for the New York Red Bulls for the first time in 2023.

Vanzeir slotted home a looping cross from John Tolkin, one-timing a shot past Eloy Room on the near post in the 86th minute in front of the South Ward.

"The whole week, we invested extremely in scoring moments in the training sessions, also about some special speeches that we give not too much impression of a problem in this direction," Head Coach Gerhard Struber said following the win.

Tolkin has recorded an assist in back-to-back matches. The Chatham, NJ native has tallied seven career MLS assists.

Cristian Cásseres, Jr., who played the ball to Tolkin, tallied his first assist of the season and the 18th assist of his MLS career. The Venezuelan midfielder has recorded seven assists in his last 10 MLS regular season matches.

Luquinhas leveled the match for New York with a second-half goal, collecting a rebound off Corey Burke's shot.

"I was really happy with this goal," Luquinhas said. "I was expecting this goal for a long time. Really happy to finally get this one."

It was his first goal since May 28, 2022, against D.C. United.

"The most important thing with the mental side with my boys stay close together and pretty special, you can see in the second half was great," Struber said. "There was a conviction to play our football."

Carlos Coronel recorded his 29th career victory for the Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls have only allowed six shots on target through the first four matches of the season, which is the lowest in MLS.

"That's the most important thing, to get the three points and give the fans something to cheer about," Cory Burke said. "I couldn’t be prouder of the guys."
