MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Red Bulls, D.C. Split Points After 8-Goal Thriller

Red Bull New York and D.C. United each walked away with a point following a 4-4 match at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday night. 

Jorge Ruvalcaba notched a brace, while Julian Hall kept scoring. Ronald Donkor scored his first goal in MLS.

New York opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Midfielder Adri Mehmeti played a ball forward to midfielder Ronald Donkor who played a through ball into the box to forward Julian Hall who struck a shot into the back of the net.

Hall scored his sixth goal of the season and the ninth of his career. The forward has five goal contributions in his last five appearances. 

The Manhattan, N.Y native’s six goals this season are tied for the second-most in the Eastern Conference and the tied for the third-most in MLS.

The Red Bulls doubled their lead in the 21st minute. Winger Jorge Ruvalcaba turned at the top of the left side of the box and played a ball through to defender Matthew Dos Santos who played a one-time cross into the box that was deflected by a D.C. defender and fell to Donkor who placed a one-time right footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Donkor scored his first career MLS goal.

The midfielder also recorded his second and third assists of the season and the sixth and seventh of his MLS career.

The Accra, Ghana native recorded his second career multi-assist match and first since he had three assists against New England Revolution on July 17, 2025.

D.C. got on the scoresheet in the 37th minute. Defender Silvan Hefti played a wide through ball to forward Jackson Hopkins who played a cross towards the penalty spot to forward Tai Baribo who placed a one-time shot into the bottom right corner.

New York scored a third in the 52nd minute. Midfielder Emil Forsberg played a ball wide to Ruvalcaba who dribble past one D.C. defender and then cut inside on a second defender and struck a right footed shot into the roof of the net.

The away side scored a second goal in the 54th minute when midfielder Matti Peltola played a ball forward to midfielder Joao Peglow who played a ball through to Hopkins. Hopkins was one on one with the goalkeeper and placed his shot into the center of the net.

D.C. United leveled the score in the 59th minute. Peglow played a through ball to Baribo who was one on one with the goalkeeper and placed a shot into the bottom right corner.

The Red Bulls regained the lead in the 71st minute. Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath rolled a ball out to Donkor who played a ball wide to Ruvalcaba. The winger dribbled down the left wing and cut inside and struck a right footed shot at the top of the box into the bottom right corner.

Ruvalcaba scored his second and third goals of the season and has three goals in his last three appearances.

The winger scored his first career MLS brace.

D.C. equalized in the 80th minute when midfielder Caden Clark played a ball to the endline that was crossed into the six-yard box by Hefti and ushered into the back of the net by Baribo.

Mehmeti dished his third assist of the season and has two goal contributions in his last three MLS appearances.

The midfielder’s three assists this season are tied for the third-most in MLS this season.

Forsberg tallied his third assist of the season and the 18th of his MLS career.

The Captain has three goal contributions in his last four appearances. The Sundsvall, Sweden native has recorded his fourth career assist against D.C. and leads the current roster in career assists against the side

Horvath earned his first career MLS assist.

Midfielder Rafael Mosquera made his first career MLS start. Defender Joyeux Masanka Bungi made his MLS debut subbing into the match in at halftime.
