The New York Red Bulls rallied back twice and then advanced on penalties to the next round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

New York and FC Dallas finished 2-2 at the end of added extra time -- then won it from the spot to move in the final eight teams in the tournament.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Noah Eile, Daniel Edelman and Emil Forsberg all converted their penalty attempts. A.J. Marcucci saved Pedrinho's attempt to put New York through.

FC Dallas opened the scoring in the 28th minute, when midfielder Bernard Kamungo was fed a pass from Petar Musa, and his shot attempt found the right-side netting.

The Red Bulls equalized the match in the 63rd minute, when midfielder Dennis Gjengaar laid the ball off for captain Daniel Edelman, who fired a shot and it fell to the feet of forward Mohammed Sofo, who fired a low shot into the back of Dallas’s net.

Dallas took the lead in the 78th minute, when midfielder Luciano Acosta found the ball in New York’s eighteen-yard box and he slotted his shot in the upper left-hand corner.

New York found another equalizer in the third minute of second half stoppage time, when midfielder Emil Forsberg earned a free-kick at the top of Dallas’s eighteen-yard box, and his attempt deflected off a Dallas defender and went into the back of the net.

Sofo scored his third U.S. Open Cup goal of the season and his fifth across all competitions. The Ghanian forward has scored in four-straight U.S. Open Cup matches.

Sofo has recorded six career goal contributions (5 G, 1 A) in his four career U.S. Open Cup matches.

Forsberg scored his first career Open Cup goal and his sixth of the season across all competitions. He has recorded a goal in back-to-back matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Forsberg has recorded six goal contributions in his last three matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Forsberg has now recorded three goal contributions in two career matches against FC Dallas.

The Red Bulls have posted a 10-0-4 mark at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Open Cup matches.

New York extended their unbeaten streak against FC Dallas to 10 matches and have had a 5-0-3 mark against them at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Defender Kyle Duncan made his 147th career appearance across all competitions, which moves him into a tie for sixth place in franchise history for most appearances by a defender with Steve Jolley.

Following Wednesday’s match, New York head to Audi Field to face Atlantic Cup rivals D.C. United on Saturday, May 24. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
