MLS to Continue Video Assistant Referee Training in Upcoming Red Bulls Preseason Matches

VAR Testing

Major League Soccer and Professional Referee Organization (PRO) announced that they will continue testing and training of video assistance for referees in upcoming preseason matches, including a handful of New York Red Bulls games.

"The continued testing will focus on ensuring that communication between the referee and the Video Assistant Referee is clear, precise, and efficient, with the aim of reducing avoidable delays to create minimum interference with maximum benefit," the league said in a release.

The Red Bulls upcoming Desert Diamond Cup matches against New York City FC, Sporting Kansas City, Houston Dynamo and the final game of the Desert Diamond Cup will all have VAR testing.

"In addition to the in-game tests during preseason, offline testing, with no impact on the game, will take place at all 22 MLS venues during MLS regular season matches from March through August with the goal of incorporating video review into MLS matches following the 2017 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target," the release stated.
