[inline_node:330768]NEW YORK — MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, on Tuesday announced a league-wide campaign to support the American and Canadian Red Cross disaster relief efforts following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last week.

“On behalf of Major League Soccer and all of our clubs, I would like to express our deepest sympathy and extend our thoughts and prayers to all of those affected by the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “MLS is pleased to be working with the Red Cross to provide the MLS family with the opportunity to make a donation to those in need.”

MLS and its clubs are raising awareness and funds and encourage fans throughout the league to support the Red Cross and their efforts as MLS kicks off its 16th season tonight with MLS First Kick presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Donations can be made in the United States by texting REDCROSS to 90999 or donating online at RedCross.org or in Canada by texting ASIA to 30333 or donating online at RedCross.ca.

MLS fans will also have the opportunity to bid on autographed memorabilia at www.MLSsoccer.com/works. Funds raised from the online auction will be donated to the Red Cross disaster relief fund.
