- The New York Red Bulls advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals on penalty kicks, 5-3 over Philadelphia on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union ended 120-minutes of play in a 1-1 draw before heading to PKs.
- New York advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the Open Cup for the second time in the last three years and the ninth time in franchise history.
- This was the second time in franchise history that the Red Bulls advanced to the next stage in the Open cup via penalty kicks. New York advanced on penalty kicks, 7-6 against the Columbus Crew in the 2000 Open Cup Quarterfinals.
- Ryan Meara put the Red Bulls in position to advance with a huge save on Philadelphia’s third penalty kick shot by Fabrice-Jean Picault.
- Felipe put the finishing touches in PKs when he cashed in the Red Bulls fifth and final penalty kick attempt.
- Sacha Kljestan opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, slotting home from the penalty spot after receiving a pass from Bradley Wright-Phillips.
- Off a long ball at midfield from Jack Elliott, Roland Alberg put in the equalizer in the 86th minute.
- The goal was Kljestan’s first of the season in any competition. His last goal came on October 1, 2016, also against Philadelphia.
- For the eighth time this season, the Red Bulls recorded a double assist on a goal. Both Wright-Phillips and Sean Davis were credited with an assist on Kljestan’s first goal of the season.
- It was both Davis and Wright-Phillips’s first assist of 2017.
- Meara tied his career-best with a game-high seven saves. Meara previously recorded seven saves in a MLS match against Columbus on April 7, 2012.
- The Red Bulls will face the New England Revolution in a Quarterfinal matchup at Jordan Field on the campus of Harvard University.
- New York earned a bit of revenge, after being eliminated from the Open Cup by the Union in each of the last two seasons.
