In the club's ongoing effort to keep you, the supporters of the club, as up to date as possible with what is going on with the first team and beyond, below in a weekly update on how the Red Bull Academy products are fairing playing for their respective collegiate sides. Academy products are translating the success they had in the Academy system to the collegiate level. Below is the update though matches of Monday, December 6.
Three Red Bull Academy products met in the national semifinals as Maryland played Michigan, with a spot in the NCAA College Cup on the line.
Overall, there are 37 Academy products playing collegiate soccer, representing 18 Universities, incuding several in the national polls.
Matt Kassell – Maryland – After a dominant run in the NCAA Playoffs, the Terps fell to Michigan in the Quarterfinals, 2-3, in double overtime. Maryland finishes the season with a record of 19-3-1. Kassell had an assist in the match and finished the season with 44 shots, 15 SOG, 9 goals, 10 assists, and 22 starts. Kassell will play his senior season next year.
Widner Saint Cyr – Maryland - After a dominant run in the NCAA Playoffs, the Terps fell to Michigan in the Quarterfinals, 2-3, in double overtime. Maryland finishes the season with a record of 19-3-1.
Dylan Mencia – Michigan – The Wolverines will compete in their first ever College Cup after defeating #3 Maryland in double overtime in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. The victory came off a stunning goal scored by Fabio Pereira at 103:18. UM will face Akron in the College Cup Semifinals in Santa Barbara, California on Friday, December 12.
