In Wednesday night’s win against D.C. United, Bradley Wright-Phillips became the fastest player in MLS history to record 100 league goals. The feat, which broke the previous mark by 15 games, came as no surprise to Captain Luis Robles.
“I’ve had the pleasure of being his teammate for a bit of five years and he never seizes to amaze me,” Robles said. “And of course, a huge congratulation to him and his achievement. To me it’s no surprise that he’s the fastest guy in MLS history to do it, just because I’ve been able to see what he’s capable of week in and week out on the training pitch, on the game field.”
Aside from being a great goalscorer, Robles believes he’s even a better person off the pitch.
“More than anything as an amazing of a player as he is, he’s an even better person, he’s an even better teammate,” Robles said. “And I’d be remised to say, this guy’s a class act, all the way around.”
Tyler Adams, who’s risen through the entire Red Bulls system, touched on the impact BWP has had on him since his academy days.
“Bradley’s probably been the most influential person for me since coming to the club,” Adams said. “He’s welcomed all the younger guys with open arms since day one, since stepping in and you know it’s really funny because when he first signed I was U-14 in academy, and going to the games, and enjoying watching him score goals."
Adams also spoke about how deserving BWP is of his great achievement.
“What a humble guy and no one more deserving obviously of breaking the record, but that goes to the work he puts in at training every day,” Adams said. “I mean there’s probably no other superstar in the league that works like he does so credit to him, there will be more to come so it’s really cool to share the pitch with him.”
Moving forward, Adams knows learning from Wright-Phillips, and all the successes he’s had in his career, will go a long way in helping not only himself, but also younger players on becoming better versions of themselves.
“I mean for someone like Bradley you have to listen closely to whatever he’s saying because obviously, he has the experiences that we don’t have,” Adams said. “Our careers are just getting started so any information we can get to give us a little bit of an edge is important and coming from a guy like him, who’s so successful and does the little things in the pitch and pays attention to the smallest details, he’s a role model for all of us.”
