HANOVER, NJ (September 15, 2013) – The New York Red Bulls reserves topped Toronto FC’s reserves, 2-1, Sunday morning at the Red Bull Training Facility.

In the first half, the Red Bulls had many opportunities to find the back of the net. In the 12th minute, Ruben Bover sent a free kick into the box. Akpan was able to rise above the defense, but headed it just over the crossbar.

In the 32nd minute, Amando Moreno dribbled the ball down the left side of the goal. He made a crossover move on his defender before cutting the ball back to his left foot and firing towards net, but the shot went wide to the right of the goal.

In the 50th minute, Toronto took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Emery Welshman. Michael Thomas passed it to Welshman, who rushed down the right wing towards the goal and fired a shot past goalkeeper Ryan Meara.

The Red Bulls would get the equalizer just six minutes later. Akpan controlled the ball in the box and slipped one past Stefan Frei. Then, in the 75th minute, with the game still tied at one, Marius Obekop ran down the left wing before sending a hard low cross into the box. Akpan was able to get his foot on it and tip it in past Frei.

In the 82nd minute, Welshman beat his defender on the left side and had a good look at the net, but Meara rushed off his line to challenge and gather the ball before Welshman could get a good shot off.
