Get to know who the Red Bulls will be playing in their upcoming matchup:

How they’re doing

It has been a roller coaster season for D.C. United so far in 2022.

After winning their first two matches without conceding a goal, they then went on a four-match losing streak that saw them fire their coach Hernán Losada.

During that streak, D.C. failed to keep a clean sheet, and only scored three goals.

With interim manager Chad Ashton in charge, they have seen a bump in performance lately, picking up six points from their last three matches, after only having six points from their first six matches.

D.C. United defeated Flower City Union, 3-0, in their third-round Open Cup match with forward Ola Kamara scoring a brace in the game.

Head-to-Head History

This will be the third all-time meeting between New York and D.C. in Open Cup history, and their first since 2009.

Since their first matchup on May 12, 1996, New York and D.C. have played each other 97 times, with D.C. holding the edge with a 44-35-18 record against the Red Bulls.

In their last three matchups, New York has an 0-2-1 record and has only scored one goal against D.C.

Who to Watch: Forward Taxiarchis Fountas

With only four MLS appearances under his belt for D.C. United, Taxiarchis “Taxi” Fountas has made an instant impact for a club looking for a spark.

In only 247 minutes, Fountas has 17 total scoring attempts, including four goals and an assist to his name. His 1.46 goals per 90 minutes leads the league.

In his first start, Fountas made his name known, tallying two goals and an assist in a 3-2 victory over New England.

His club career began at Greece's AEK Athens before a move to Austria's Red Bull Salzburg, building toward his starring role at Rapid Vienna.

If he makes an appearance in the Open Cup matchup against the Red Bulls, he’ll be a key target for the defense to consider.
