How They’re Doing

Nashville SC started their season with a bang, defeating 2022 Eastern Conference finalist New York City FC 2-0 on Saturday.

Captain and USMNT starter Walker Zimmerman opened the season’s scoring for Nashville and helped secure a clean sheet in their first match of 2023.

Having been moved to the Western Conference for the 2022 season, Nashville had a seasons of ups and downs, but were lead to a fifth place finish in the west by MVP Hany Mukhtar.

Nashville had a stout defense in 2022, only allowing 31 goals in 34 MLS league matches.

Head-to-head

Nashville and New York met in the preseason, where a Cristian Cásseres Jr. goal in the first half led the Red Bulls to a 1-0 victory.

Nashville’s only trip to Red Bull Arena resulted in a 2-0 victory during the 2021 season.

In total, the clubs have only met twice, with New York owning that win and a draw against Nashville.

Player to Watch - LW Jacob Shaffelburg

The Canadian International arrived in Nashville during the 2022 summer transfer window and has made an immediate impact.

In ten MLS appearances, Shaffelburg has three goals and one assist, including a goal in the season opener against NYCFC.

Shaffelburg arrived from Toronto FC, where he registered four goals and ten assists in 61 appearances.

The 23-year-old can play all over the field with career appearances at left winger, centre-forward, central midfield, left back, and more.

His versatility will be something for New York to watch out for.
