THE OTHER SIDE: What You Need to Know About Philadelphia Union

Get to know who the Red Bulls will be playing in their upcoming matchup:

How They’re Doing

After a historic run to the MLS Cup Final in 2022, Philadelphia has sputtered out of the gate in 2023.

In nine matches, the Union have only won three and currently sit in tenth place in the Eastern Conference. Managing MLS league matches alongside Concacaf Champions League has taken a toll on many MLS clubs, and Philadelphia are no different.

The Union made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League, but were dumped out of the competition after a 4-1 aggregate loss to LAFC.

Before a 4-2 home victory against Toronto FC on April 29, the Union were winless in five MLS league matches. After having a historic defense in 2022, they have only managed to keep two clean sheets so far in 2023.

Head-to-Head History

This will be the 40th matchup between Philadelphia and New York.

The Union own the slight 16-15-8 edge in the series since they first met in 2010. They have also dominated the recent matchup history, going undefeated in the clubs’ last nine matchups.

Player to Watch- Forward Daniel Gazdag

Union forward Daniel Gazdag is following up his 2022 golden boot challenge, where he scored 22 goals, with another successful campaign so far in 2023.

In only eight appearances, Gazdag has registered three goals and seven assists, the latter being the most in MLS.

In 80 total appearances for the Union across all competitions since arriving in Philadelphia in 2021, Gazdag has 35 goals and thirteen assists.

Philadelphia has a three-headed monster in the attack with Gazdag, Julián Carranza and Michael Uhre, but Gazdag should have his name highlighted and circled as one to watch out for.
