TIES THAT BIND: Club Connections Between RBNY and Columbus Crew SC

The New York Red Bulls play host to the Columbus Crew on Sunday, October 16 at 3 p.m.


Here are some connections between the two clubs...


-Columbus’ Harrison Afful and New York’s Gideon Baah have both appeared for the Ghanaian National Team. D.C. United’s Lloyd Sam, who was traded from the Red Bulls this season, also made an appearance.


-Dax McCarty and Crew SC's Corey Ashe played together at the University of North Carolina in 2004-2005. Columbus Coach Gregg Berhalter is also an alum.


-Waylon Francis of Columbus has played alongside longtime Red Bull Roy Miller on the Costa Rican National Team.


-Gonzalo Veron and Crew SC’s Federico Higuain and Gaston Sauro all hail from Argentina and played against each other in Argentina from 2009 to 2012


-Columbus players Ola Kamara and Nicolai Naess were born in Norway, which is also where former Red Bull player Jan Gunnar Solli is from.


-Chris Duvall and Black & Gold captain Michael Parkhurst both played for Wake Forest, although not at the same time.


-Mohammed Saeid of Columbus, former Red Bulls Coach Hans Backe, and former Red Bulls player Markus Holgersson are all from Sweden.


-Columbus’ Rodrigo Saravia played in his youth for Antigua GFC, the Guatemalan team the Red Bulls faced twice this year in CONCACAF Champions League play.


-Tony Tchani played for the Red Bulls in 2010-2011 before eventually finding his way to Columbus, where he has been since 2011.
