CHICAGO (October 23, 2014) – Two members of the New York Red Bulls Under-18 Academy team have been called into the U.S. Under-18 Boys National Team camp by U.S. U-18 head coach Javier Perez as part of a 36-man roster.
Andrew Lombard, from Montclair, N.J., and Juan Sanchez from Ossining, N.Y., have been selected to participate in the nine-day camp, which began yesterday at the U.S. Soccer National Training Facility in Carson, California.
“Andrew has been with us for a few years,” said Paul O’Donnell, Red Bulls U-18 coach. He’s a great player, he has great athleticism and he’s a really good one-on-one defender. He’s a guy that we think has a chance to play at the next level, so it’s nice to see him getting called in.”
“Juan, a striker, is a new to our academy this year, and we’ve been very happy with his performance,” continued O’Donnell. He has a great work rate, and he’s had a great start to the season. It’s nice to see him get rewarded.”
According to a release from U.S. Soccer, this training cycle is geared towards players who will be eligible to participate in 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifying. Most of the players invited, including Lombard and Sanchez, are participating in their first camp at this age.
The camp, which runs from October 23-31, will feature an intrasquad match on Sunday, Oct. 26. There is also the possibility of a second match against a local squad during the camp.
