Giovinco wasn’t the only player to put a Canadian team in the playoffs last week. Piatti booked the Impact’s second-ever postseason berth, weaving through the New England Revolution defense and finding the back of the net with a lovely curling, dipping effort to give Montreal a 1-0 road win.
Mike Grella and the Red Bulls clinched their playoff spot long ago, but his goal was no less notable than Giovinco’s or Piatti’s. The New York winger scored the fastest goal in MLS history on Sunday, intercepting a pass off the opening kickoff, racing toward goal and firing home just seven seconds into the Red Bulls’ 4-1 win against Philadelphia.
Higuain’s goal also came in a winning effort, with the Argentine sealing Crew SC’s 2-0 win at Toronto on Saturday with a beautiful 90th-minute chipped shot over goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
Keane was the lone nominee whose goal came in a loss, but that doesn’t diminish the quality of his finish; the Irish international’s volley off a bouncing long ball over Timbers ‘keeper Adam Kwarasey in LA’s 5-2 loss to Portland was as good as it gets.
