THE WEEKLY: Rule of three

Red Bulls Take Three in Philly

New York went to Philadelphia and took three points on the strength of three second half goals. Shaun Wright-Phillips made his debut and immediately had an impact on the game. Just minutes into his New York career the left winger earned a penalty that was converted by Sacha Kljestan. He then made a play to set up his brother, Bradley, for the game-winner. Anatole Abang added a third in stoppage time to complete the scoring.

SWP Earns Team of the Week in Debut

Just 30 minutes into his MLS career, Shaun Wright-Phillips has been named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 22 after earning a penalty and setting up the game-winning goal in the Red Bulls’ 3-1 win at Philadelphia on Saturday.

Wright-Phillips made his debut in the 61st minute, and less than five minutes later got into a dangerous position and was taken down in the penalty area, earning a penalty that was converted by midfielder Sacha Kljestan. Minutes later, the winger brought down a ball in the box, cut to the end line to leave his defender behind and put in a low ball for his brother, Bradley Wright-Phillips, to finish from the edge of the six yard box.

The Englishman joins MLS after a lengthy career in the English Premier League, including two spells with Manchester City as well as time with Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers.

BWP 4 GoTW

BWP earned a nomination for MLS Goal of the Week for his game-winner against Philadelphia. Bradley Wright-Phillips showed off a natural chemistry with his brother, Shaun, by finishing an offering from his new teammate in the 74th minute, putting New York up 2-1 and quieting the Union fans just a minute after Sebastien Le Toux had tied the game.

Midweek in Montreal

The New York Red Bulls are in Montreal on Wednesday for a midweek showdown with the Montreal Impact. Kickoff from Stade Saputo is set for 8 p.m. ET, with coverage on MSG beginning at 7:30.

The match will be a homecoming of sorts for several Red Bulls. Current Red Bulls head man Jesse Marsch served as the first head coach of the Impact, going 12-16-6. Center back Karl Ouimette, who signed with New York ahead of 2015, is a Quebec native, and was the first Homegrown signing in Montreal Impact history. Red Bulls midfielder Felipe was recruited to MLS by Marsch for the Impact’s inaugural season. The Brazilian played three years in Montreal before joining Marsch in New York last winter.

New York is 5-2-1 against Montreal, though most of the success has come at home. The Red Bulls are 4-0-0 against the Impact at Red Bull Arena, but just 1-2-1 in trips to Montreal.  New York is undefeated in its last three matches against the Impact, including three wins.

Going For the Derby Sweep

After the match against Montreal, the Red Bulls return home to host the third and final New York Derby. New York City FC will visit Red Bull Arena for the second time this year. RBNY has taken both previous meetings, first defeating NYC FC in the inaugural derby, 2-1 at RBA, despite being reduced to 10 men.

The Red Bulls then went to Yankee Stadium and took another three points with a 3-1 win. New York struck three times after giving up an early goal, including getting the first career goals from Matt Miazga and Chris Duvall.

NYRB II Wins Third Straight

New York Red Bulls II claimed their third consecutive victory against Saint Louis FC at the Red Bulls Training Facility in East Hanover, 2-1. Marius Obekop opened the scoring in the 40th minute, and Franklin Castellanos claimed the game-winner in the 90+’ minute.

New York Red Bulls II improved to 9-7-4 with the victory, and remain one-point behind Richmond Kickers in the Eastern Conference standings.

New York took the lead in the 40th minute, thanks to a lethal counterattack. Saint Louis earned a corner kick, but the cross fell short and NYRB II gained possession. As numbers flew forward, James Thomas spotted Obekop making a central run. Thomas’ pass split the defense and left Obekop alone with the goalkeeper, and the Cameroonian slotted a ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to put New York ahead.

U-23s Make Final in First PDL Season

The New York Red Bulls U-23s advanced to the Championship of the Premier Development League last weekend, but ultimately fell in the final to K-W United FC, 4-3.

The Red Bulls advanced to the championship game by defeating Ocala Stampede in a national semifinal on Friday, 2-1, in extra time.

K-W United came out hot on Sunday, scoring three first half goals to jump out in front. The Red Bulls rallied in the second half before falling by the final score of 4-3.

The Red Bulls joined PDL this season after going undefeated in the NPSL last Summer and winning a national championship. The U-23s warmed to the tougher league by going 9-2-3 and winning the Northeast division.
