Red Bulls Weekly Update: May 3

RED BULLS TAKE ON EARTHQUAKES ON SATURDAY: The New York Red Bulls, who are off to their best-ever start in the club’s 14-year history, will look to win their fourth-straight game when they travel to the west coast to take on the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, May 8 at 10:00 PM (TV: MSG; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). The last time New York went on a four-game winning streak was in 2003 from April 26 to May 24, when it won five-straight.

New York currently sits in first place in the Eastern Conference on 15 points with a record of 5-1-0. The 15 points through six matches is good for the best six-match start to a season in franchise history. On Saturday, the Red Bulls will visit Buck Shaw Stadium to take on the San Jose Earthquakes, who are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference, on nine points with a record of 3-2-0. In their last match, the Earthquakes defeated the Colorado Rapids by a score of 1-0 in San Jose. Chris Wondolowski, who leads the Earthquakes in goals this season with three, scored the game winner. San Jose has yet to lose at Buck Shaw Stadium in 2010, compiling a home record of 2-0-1 thus far.

The Red Bulls trail the all-time series with San Jose, as New York has gone 8-14-6 in the teams’ 28 previous regular season contests. New York’s last victory on the road in MLS play against the Earthquakes came on Oct. 5, 2003, when the Earthquakes still played in Spartan Stadium. Since San Jose rejoined the league in 2008 after a two season hiatus and moved to Buck Shaw Stadium, the Red Bulls has gone 1-1-1 in three matches in all competitions. Last season, the Red Bulls defeated San Jose 4-1 May 8 at Giants Stadium, while the ‘Quakes knocked off New York 1-0 in the return match at Buck Shaw Stadium on Oct. 3. New York did earn a 2-1 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Preliminary Round victory in San Jose on April 29, 2009.

The Earthquakes feature former Red Bulls defender Chris Leitch. With New York from 2003-2005 and 2007-2008, Leitch made 101 appearances for the club and amassed 8,224 minutes played in the regular season, netting five assists in his time. Leitch also featured in nine postseason matches for the club, starting eight of them. In 2009 for San Jose, Leitch was named the club’s Defensive Player of the Year, starting in 29 of 30 matches and collecting seven assists.

RED BULLS KNOCK OFF UNITED: Second half goals from forwards Salou Ibrahim and Juan Pablo Angel helped give the Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls a 2-0 road win over Atlantic Cup rival, D.C. United, at RFK Stadium Saturday afternoon. The victory, which continued the club’s best start in team history, snapped New York's 10-game winless streak in the nation's capital, dating back to New York’s last triumph on Oct. 8, 2005.

United looked to get in front early in the second minute when forward Adam Cristman was given space at the top of the 18-yard-box and fired a shot wide left. Four minutes later, Cristian Castillo pushed off his defender and hit a low attempt that did not trouble goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

In the ninth minute, Angel nearly put the visitors ahead, heading a Joel Lindpere free kick past the right post. Coundoul was called upon seven minutes after to deny a point blank header from Clyde Simms, after he was left open from a Kurt Morsink cross.

Later in the half, Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler was able to run onto a Simms header back into his own end and tried to get a shot off, but the United defense recovered and blocked his attempt. Moments after, Angel blasted an attempt into the arms of goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Simms almost gave United the lead two minutes into the second half. With Coundoul off his line, Simms tried to volley it over him but the goalkeeper was able to parry it away. Coundoul made five saves Saturday, earning his third shutout of the season.

That save proved to be crucial, as the Red Bulls took the lead in the 51st minute. Angel found midfielder Dane Richards on the right flank and he made a darting run past his defender to the endline before sliding it to Ibrahim, who tapped it in for his second goal in as many matches.

New York doubled its lead nine minutes later. Richards earned a free kick by the touchline. Lindpere’s ensuing delivery found Angel, who leaped over his defender and nodded it past Perkins.

Angel nearly scored his second goal of the match, taking a Danleigh Borman feed in the penalty box and curling it wide less than 15 minutes from full time.

RED BULLS TEAM UP WITH NYPD FOR PERU TRIP: In the framework of the 'Soccer for children - Breaking Borders' program implemented by the New York Red Bulls in collaboration with the Police Department of New York City, a delegation from both entities will travel to Lima, Peru in the coming days in order to perform an annual soccer clinic and lead to economically disadvantaged children from different schools. The delegation will provide 150 soccer balls and sports clothing for over 1500 children. This grant will attempt to send, through the delegation of goodwill, a positive message to reflect that by way of sport, one can get a better life and that nothing is impossible with the joint efforts of both countries.

New York Red Bulls Senior Director of Communications and Hispanic Affairs Ernesto Motta, who will represent the Red Bulls in the delegation, said: "I am very excited about this project which began some time ago together with other leaders of football in the city of New York.  This program has had great success in the past as we have travelled to countries like Ecuador and Colombia, which we visited last year. Our goal is to visit countries in South and Central America, conduct soccer clinics for needy children and hope that our modest donation may bring a positive message and is something very positive in their lives.”

Avianca's participation has been essential for the transport of the donations that have been made not only in Colombia, but in Peru this year. In selflessness and with great spirit of collaboration, its executives have always answered the call and have become mainstays of this campaign, which is expected to repeat year after year with the same success.

"After hearing about the program, created by the New York Red Bulls with the collaboration of the New York Police Department, Avianca joined this program, supporting their visit to Colombia, more specifically the ‘coffee belt’. We now continue with the journey that this group takes in Peru, and in conjunction with the organizers, we are finalizing details for the visit to the city of Cartagena, Colombia in 2011.  Worthy campaigns are ones that should be supported unreservedly and that's why we joined in, providing Avianca luggage transport and logistics group connections when required,” said Jaime Londoño, Airport Director Avianca Bogota.

This trip will take place from May 18 through May 26, visiting the Peruvian capital of Lima and its surroundings. The delegation will have the opportunity to visit schools and orphanages in poor to implement the grants.

This major event also has the support of the Embassy of the United States of America in Lima, Peru, which has designated the locations most in need.

The soccer team of the Police of the City of New York will play several friendly matches to promote closer ties with their counterparts in Peru, and have received the idea with great enthusiasm, working hard to ensure that this campaign is successful.

"Once again we are excited to be part of this delegation and sharing with the Red Bulls this new experience to deliver a major donation. With great pride on behalf of our Police Department of the City of New York, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the children of Peru fully enjoy the clinics and the moments we are able to spend with them.  It's nice to play in other countries representing our department, but more so giving them soccer balls and sports clothing for those in need, which makes our hearts full," said NYPD Lt. Ronald Mejia.
