Red Bulls Weekly Update: June 14

Weekly Update 6-14

RED BULLS HOST CRUZEIRO FRIDAY: The Red Bulls, who are tied for first place in the Eastern Conference in MLS play, return to game action for the first time since June 5 when they host famed Brazilian club Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in a friendly at Red Bull Arena on Friday, June 18 at 8:00 PM ET. This will be the second time the Red Bulls will welcome one of Brazil’s most popular clubs to Red Bull Arena, as New York opened its brand new stadium on March 20 with a 3-1 victory over Santos FC in the venue’s inaugural match.

Cruzeiro is one of the most popular and successful clubs from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Throughout their illustrious history, Cruzeiro has won their state title, the Campeonato Mineiro, 36 times, most recently in 2009. Their 36 state titles are second most all-time in the state, trailing only Atletico Mineiro’s 40 championships. Cruzeiro also won the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, Brazil’s national championship, in 2003. In that same year, Cruzeiro became the first and, to this day, only club to complete Brazil’s “National Triple Crown”, winning the Brasileiro Serie A, the Copa do Brasil, and their state championship all in the same season. The club has a successful track record in international competition, as they are one of only eight clubs to have won the CONMEBOL Treble in their history, winning the Copa Libertadores, Supercopa Sudamericana and the Recopa. The club is coached by former Cruzeiro and Brazil National Team player Adilson Batista.

Last week on June 13, Cruzeiro defeated MLS side New England Revolution, 3-0, in a friendly at Gillette Stadium. Cruzeiro forward Wellington Paulista scored a hat trick, netting goals in the 24th, 49th, and 83rd minutes to down the Revolution.

RBA TO HOST CHURCHILL CUP FINALS SATURDAY: Red Bull Arena will serve as the host of the Finals of the Churchill Cup, an international rugby event, this Saturday, June 19, 2010. The Churchill Cup will be the first international non-soccer event to be staged at the 25,000-seat venue in Harrison, NJ. Group tickets are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER while individual tickets can be purchased by logging onto www.redbullarena.us.

The Churchill Cup showcased the USA Eagles, Canada, England Saxons and tournament newcomers France A, Russia and Uruguay in three rounds of doubleheader pool matches at Infinity Park, Glendale on June 5, 9 and 13 before moving to Red Bull Arena on June 19. In the final of the 2010 edition, the England Saxons will take on Canada 2:30 PM ET. Canada booked its spot in the final by defeating Uruguay on June 5 by a score of 48–10, and by upsetting France A 33–27 on June 13. England’s road to the final started on June 9, with the Saxons scoring a 49–17 victory over Russia. England then defeated the United States convincingly, 32–9 on June 13 to reach the final. The day will kickoff at 12:00 PM ET with the fifth-place match between Russia and Uruguay, as both nations will be looking for their first victory in the 2010 competition. After the final at 2:30 PM ET, the United States will battle France A in the third-place match, slated to start at 5:30 PM ET.

In 2009, the first time the Churchill Cup was held entirely in the U.S., the pool matches consistently attracted near sellout crowds to Glendale's Infinity Park and the tournament hopes to build on past success in 2010.

Churchill Cup Background: The Churchill Cup is an alliance between the English Rugby Football Union (RFU), Rugby Canada and USA Rugby. The tournament was launched in 2003 and aims to develop and grow the sport of rugby union across Canada and the USA. It is named after former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who shared close ties with the United States - his mother was American - and with Canada during the Second World War. With support from the International Rugby Board the tournament has grown in success since 2003 when 5,000 people attended to watch the three Alliance nations in Vancouver. Since its introduction, both men's and women's teams from England, USA and Canada have participated although since 2005 it has been a men only event. Invitational sides from Argentina, Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand have all participated, while there was also a women's competition in 2003 and 2004.
