Red Bulls release veteran Wolyniec

The New York Red Bulls on Friday afternoon released longtime striker John Wolyniec.

The 33-year-old had seen his opportunities diminish this year under new coach Hans Backe. He made only four MLS appearances in 2010. The emergence of other striking options, including Macoumba Kandji and rookie Conor Chinn, also affected his role.

“John is a true professional and a hard working player,” said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. "We spoke to John about staying on with the club in another capacity but he expressed an interest in continuing on with his playing career. We wish him the best of luck in the future."

Wolyniec, a local kid from nearby Staten Island, leaves the club having made 142 league appearances—second most in club history—in three separate stints with the franchise.

No word yet on whether there is interest from any other MLS clubs.
