Red Bulls Under-23s Defeat Vermont in First Round of 2014 U.S. Open Cup

HANOVER, NJ (May 7, 2014) – The New York Red Bulls Under-23s (NPSL) defeated the Vermont Voltage (PDL) 2-1 in the first round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night at Red Bull Training Facility. The Red Bulls advanced to the next round, where they will face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL PRO) on the road on May 14.

The Red Bulls dominated the match in the first half, with hosts forcing goalkeeper Aleksander Djekic to make a save off a corner kick before Sammy Adjei’s right footed shot went wide right. In the 14th minute, Dan Bedoya’s header from a Franklin Castellanos was off target.

Four minutes later though, Scott Thomsen put the Red Bulls ahead. Off a strong move down the left wing, Thomsen was put through into the penalty box and slotted it home.

New York doubled its advantage 10 minutes before the break. Kendan Anderson fired a right-footed shot that deflected off a Voltage defender and bounced into the back of the net.

Vermont pulled one back in the 68th minute. Goalkeeper Evan Louro was able to get a hand on Adrian Saldana’s left-footed drive from long range, but couldn’t keep it out as the Voltage made the score 2-1.
