Red Bull U-18s (5) at Richmond United (0)
March 8, 2015 at Ukrop Park (Richmond, VA)

The Red Bulls U-18 Academy recorded a convincing 5-0 win on the road against Richmond United. The Red Bulls started the game quickly and opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Defender Gabe Viana neatly played a ball through to forward Juan Sebastian Sanchez who ran behind the Richmond backline and finished past the keeper with a well-placed right-footed shot. The lead was doubled in the 36th minute when Sanchez played a one-time cross from the left flank that forward Wes Wade finished at the near post after a great run towards goal. Sanchez headed in at the near post for his second goal of the game in the 55th minute when Captain Derrick Etienne whipped in a corner kick to the near post.

In the 65th minute, Wade finished from close range after another Etienne corner kick. The scoring was completed in the 83rd minute. Wade had a close range effort cleared off the goal-line, but he was then able to pick up the clearance and slipped a neat pass to Malcolm Dixon to make the score 5-0. Goalkeeper Tomas Lapnas recorded his 4th shutout of the season.

“We were focused today on keeping a clean sheet and closing down players quicker to get the ball back and start the attack," said Man of the Match Gideon Metrikin. "We did a good job of limiting their chances and our forwards did a good job today pressing and our collective mentality in defending was good”

Red Bull U-16's (3) at Richmond United (0)
March 8, 2015 at Ukrop Park (Richmond, VA)

The U-16’s kicked off their first spring game of the USDA season with a win on road against Richmond United. The first goal came after 17 minutes when a low cross by Kyle Casey from the right side was finished off from close range by Omir Fernandez who scored his ninth goal of the season. The Richmond goalkeeper made two excellent saves on Casey and Saramago to keep the game at 1-0 going into the break.

Omir Fernandez scored his 10th goal for the season shortly after half-time with a wonderfully curled shot into the top corner after cutting in from the left side. Fernandez has scored a number of wonderful goals this season but this has to rank as one of his best with a great individual effort.

The U-16’s started to control the game in the second half and created a number of other good opportunities to add to their tally. Brian Saramago concluded the scoring in the 67th minute after Bratislav Petkroric broke up pressure in the midfield and played a ball through to Saramago who ran through and slotted home. Stout defensive performances limited Richmond to very few chances on goal and secured Xavier Kennedy’s fourth shutout for the season.

“We were able to control the game for long spells which has been an area of focus for us," said captain Jared Gilbey. "We did a good job of moving the ball and we probably could have won by more if we had taken some of our chances better. We were especially happy to get a clean sheet and put in a good performance from the back to the front. Now we need to focus on preparing for our next game.”

NY Lineup: Xavier Kennedy, Sean Teixeria, Vincent Borden, Kyle Perno, Rodrigo D'Andrea, Ryan Mingachos, Jared Gilbey, Jeanpaul Marin (Kazu Shigenobu 65'), Kyle Casey (Bratislav Petkoric 50'), Brian Saramago (Zach Ryan 67'), Omir Fernandez (Guiseppe Margiottiello 65')
