New York Red Bulls Sign Shaun Wright-Phillips

HARRISON, N.J. (July 27, 2015) – Former English Premier League standout Shaun Wright-Phillips has signed a contract with the New York Red Bulls. A former member of England’s World Cup team, Shaun Wright-Phillips joins his brother Bradley with the Red Bulls.

Per MLS and club policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Shaun is a proven player who has played on soccer’s largest stage,” said New York Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis. “He can play a number of positions for us and is an excellent fit in our locker room. When we evaluated the unique set of circumstances along with the quality that Shaun has, it became apparent that we needed to be aggressive about adding Shaun to our club. We are pleased that he will be wearing a Red Bull jersey and we can’t wait for him to take the field.”

He will be available for the Red Bulls Saturday when the Red Bulls travel to PPL Park to face the Philadelphia Union.

A native of London, England, Shaun Wright-Phillips has spent time with Queens Park Rangers (2011-15), Manchester City (1999-05, 2008-11) and Chelsea (2005-08) in the Premier League.

"We are pleased to add Shaun to our club," said Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch. "Shaun has performed at the highest levels of the game for his entire career, in the Premier League and on the international level, and brings a wealth of talent and experience. He has been training here and we have seen his professionalism day in and day out. We think he is a tremendous addition both on the field and as a veteran presence in our locker room."

Shaun Wright-Phillips has been part of teams that have won two FA Cups, a Premier League championship, one League Cup and a Community Shield.

He totaled 36 caps and six goals with England’s national team from 2004-10 and was on England’s final 23-man roster in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He appeared in England’s first two games in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against the United States and Algeria.

Shaun Wright-Phillips enjoyed a breakout season with Manchester City in 2004-05, scoring 10 times in 33 appearances before moving to Chelsea. He made 299 Premier League appearances and scored 31 goals over the course of his career.

The Wright-Phillips brothers will play on the same side for the first time since 2004 with Manchester City.
