New York Red Bulls Sign Gonzalo Veron

HARRISON, N.J. (August 5, 2015) – The New York Red Bulls have completed the transfer of winger Gonzalo Veron from Club Atletico San Lorenzo in the Argentine Primera Division, pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Veron joins the Red Bulls as a Designated Player and he may be eligible to appear in an official game as early as Sunday at Red Bull Arena vs. New York City FC.

Per MLS and club policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Gonzalo is a young, dynamic player who fits extremely well into our style of play,” said Sporting Director Ali Curtis. “He has played for one of the top teams in South America and has shown he can play any of the front four positions. Not only are we getting a player who can help us immediately, he is someone who fits well into our long-term plans for our club.”

The 25-year-old Veron is a native of Moreno, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He made his pro debut for Sportiva Italiano at 19 in Primera B, the second division of Argentine Football. Veron made 62 appearances across all competitions for Italiano before moving to San Lorenzo in the top division in 2012.

"We are excited to add Gonzalo to our club," said Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch. "We think he fits into the style that we want to play. He is a young, exciting player with the ability to play a few different attacking roles. He has the potential to be a dynamic player in this league."

In 2013, he was a part of the San Lorenzo squad that placed first in the Primera Division’s Torneo Inicial, the first tournament of the season. By virtue of the first-place finish San Lorenzo gained entry into the 2014 Copa Libertadores. The side advanced out of the group stage with a 2-2-2 record, but were seeded 15th heading into the Round of 16. Despite that, San Lorenzo rallied for four straight wins to lift the trophy as club champions of CONMEBOL. Veron appeared in both the semifinal and final legs of the competition.

In 2015, the winger has made 15 Torneo Inicial appearances for San Lorenzo, scoring two goals and three assists. He has also seen action in eight matches in the Primera Division with one assist, and has played in two FIFA Club World Cup matches as well.

Veron helped guide San Lorenzo to its first appearance in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014.

Less than 500 tickets are available for Veron’s possible debut Sunday in the New York Derby, but tickets are available for the next two matches at Red Bull Arena on August 15 vs. Toronto FC and August 30 vs. D.C. United. Fans can click here for single-game tickets or visit NewYorkRedBulls.com for more information.
