Red Bulls Working to Get ‘Cleaner,’ ‘More Clinical’

The New York Red Bulls are focusing their training on being cleaner for their upcoming game against Orlando City SC, according to Head Coach Jesse Marsch.

“We’ve got to be a little bit cleaner,” Marsch said after training on Tuesday. “We need to be little bit more effective with our ideas and movements around the goal.”

Captain Sacha Kljestan said the team put in a good day of training on Tuesday and he was “excited on how the day went.”

“We need to be a little bit more clinical in the final third by putting more shots on target and challenging their goalkeepers more,” Kljestan said about the team’s recent play.

Marsch said the Red Bulls have been creating chances around the goal, but haven’t been able to “get those parts right.”

“It’s close to turning the corner. It’s close to coming together. I’m just trying to find the right way to encourage the right things and create certain relationships on the field and understanding of roles and responsibilities in a clean way,” Marsch said. “I think we’ve made little amounts of progress through the year, but not as much of progress as we would have liked to have seen.”

Kljestan said the team is going through “growing pains” right now.

“That’s something we have to deal with and we have to have patience with,” he said.

As for the immediate future?

“We’re going to keep getting better,” Marsch said.
