Red Bulls Putting Focus on Scoring, Especially on the Road

The New York Red Bulls have struggled on the road in 2017, and have had a tough time putting the ball in the back of the net. Head Coach Jesse Marsch knows this is a pain point for the team.

“We are not able to score on the road, so that's the most difficult thing to come up with a solution,” Marsch said following the team’s 1-0 loss to Montreal Impact. “On the road, we go down, we can't score and we can't take a lead.”

The Red Bulls have four road goals this season, all coming in their first three games on the road. They have been unable to find the back of the net away from Red Bull Arena in their past four games.

Felipe said New York needs to focus more in the final third.

“We just need to find a way to finish our scoring chances. We've been so good in the last few years, but it hasn't happened this year,” he said. “We have to look at ourselves, talk to each other and win games on the road and be better.”

The Red Bulls are 1-6-0 on the road this season, with the lone win coming against Atlanta United FC in the first game of the season.

Sacha Kljestan said the team hasn’t “sustained enough possession high up the field.”

“We can’t all rely on Bradley Wright-Phillips to get 25 goals every season,” Kljestan said. “The rest of us attackers need to pitch in a little bit more.”

New York is 6-7-2 on the season, sixth overall in the Eastern Conference with 20 points (1.33 points per game). They have a minus-6 goal differential, second worst in the conference.

“This year, for whatever reason, we are cold and cannot finish our plays,” Marsch said. “We have good chances, but cannot capitalize. It puts pressure on our back line and more pressure on our team on the road.
