Red Bulls Aim to Become Seventh MLS Club to Turn Around 2-1 Deficit

The New York Red Bulls are looking to make history.

Since 2003 when MLS changed from a three-legged conference semifinal series to the two-legged playoff series, six MLS franchises have advanced after beginning a conference semifinal down 2-1 in the first leg. (2006: Colorado, Houston; 2009: Chicago; 2013 Sporting KC; 2015: FC Dallas, Columbus)

Following a loss in leg one of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 2-1, the Red Bulls find themselves in the same situation and hope to become the seventh team to overcome a 2-1 deficit this weekend.

Of the six clubs that advanced after falling 2-1 in the first leg, three teams went on to reach MLS Cup, two of which won the cup.

Columbus Crew SC reached MLS Cup in 2015 after overturning a 2-1 loss with a 2-1 win against the Montreal Impact, eventually winning with a third goal in extra time.

The two teams to have won MLS Cup after overcoming a 2-1 first leg loss include the Houston Dynamo in 2006 and Sporting KC in 2013.

The Dynamo came back to defeat Chivas USA, 2-0, in the second leg to advance, while SKC won 2-1 and scored a third goal in extra time to win the series.

The only club to overturn a 2-1 loss starting at home and heading into a second leg on the road was the 2006 Colorado Rapids, who lost 2-1 at home to FC Dallas, only to advance with a 2-1 road win to force extra time and advance after PKs.

The Red Bulls take on Toronto FC in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Sunday, November 5 at 3 p.m. ET (TV: ESPN, STREAM: Watch ESPN, RADIO: New York Red Bulls Radio on Tunein in English and Spanish).
