Red Bulls Academy sides combined for a 3-1 record this past weekend in matches against the Player Development Academy and the Montreal Impact. Here’s how each individual team faired…
The 99 pre-Academy Red Bulls suffered their first loss of the season this past weekend, marking the end of a 21-game unbeaten streak. The 1-0 loss came at the hands of the Player Development Academy (PDA) Sunday afternoon. New York will look to bounce back next weekend as they prepare to take on the third place Gottschee.
In U-14 action, the Red Bulls found themselves in an early 1-0 hole against PDA. However, the resilient side pieced together an offensive surge that gave them a 3-1 lead heading into the half. They’d later tack on two additional goals en route to a smooth 5-1 victory, improving the team’s record to 24-1-1.
A 3-1 win over the Montreal Impact pushed the U-16s record to 17-1-2. Malcolm Dixon earned all three of the Red Bulls’ goals, while Gianni Carillo did his part in goal to help secure the ‘W,’ including a big save on a Montreal free kick when the Red Bulls were up by just a goal.
And finally in U-18 action, the Red Bulls defeated the Impact 4-3 on goals from Erik Sa, Alex Muyl, Adam Najem and Arun Basuljevic. Sa opened up the scoring in the 22nd minute when he sent home a nice feed from Vinny Brunetti for his fifth of the season. That would be all the scoring either side would see in the first half, as New York took a 1-0 lead into the break. However, the flood gates opened up in the second, as Montreal jumped out in the 47th minute to level the score. New York answered back six minutes later when Muyl buried his 15th of the season off a penalty kick, but saw that tally canceled out less than 10 minutes later when Montreal drew level at 2-2. In the 75th minute, it was Najem finding the mesh on a pass from Ethan Decker to give the Red Bulls a 3-2 lead. Basuljevic tacked on another to help pad the lead, but Montreal rushed back in with a late tally in the 92nd minute off a corner kick to close the gap to only one. At that point though, it was too little too late, as New York escaped with a narrow 4-3 victory.
